Bamboo Crafts & Sculpture Workshop
We will meet at my farm estate and go for a farm tour and walk. Exploring the incredible beauty and diversity of a true native Hawaiian forest system of old growth Ohia trees, a natural gulch, a rare Kolea Lau nui, wild coffee and many unique fruit trees and several bamboo specimens, including Rare Black bamboos. It is a picturesque place with vast ocean views and gardens . We can harvest bamboo poles depending on the group dynamics, or I have plenty harvested in my studio. We will then head into my studio shop and I will give a short talk on bamboo in history, culture and how we can use it to better the world in modern materials sciences. We will then all be able to cut a piece of bamboo and make a vase, chop sticks, a tea cup or whatever the individual is dreaming up within the time allotted. I have simple tools, all hand operated, such as Japanese bamboo hand saws, splitters, sandpaper to assist the beginner. We can weave a small bamboo panel, (always a crowd favorite!) or make a beautiful Japanese style Ikebana Vase or the list is truly endless, often each person sees something different. Each person has the opportunity to take a piece of Hawaiian, organic bamboo home with them.
